United Launch Alliance Receives 2013 Delivery of Atlas V RD-180 Engines from RD AMROSS

Decatur, Ala., (Oct. 24, 2013) – United Launch Alliance (ULA) recently received its 2013 delivery of Atlas V RD-180 engines from RD AMROSS. The four engines arrived on an Antonov aircraft at Huntsville International Airport in Alabama where they were transported to ULA’s facility in Decatur, Ala.

“We have enjoyed a strong 18-year relationship with RD AMROSS and its two joint venture partners NPO Energomash and Pratt & Whitney,” said Michael Gass, ULA president and CEO. “RD AMROSS is a tremendous supplier and has always provided on-time deliveries and an extremely reliable product.”

The RD-180 engine is a powerful combination of innovation and performance, delivering more than 860,000 pounds of thrust at liftoff. In total, the engine has accumulated more than 50,000 seconds of engine operation time through a combination of launches and testing.  NPO Energomash ground tests each engine through its full operating range prior to delivery.

“We are proud to supply the RD-180 engines to ULA and be part of the team that has delivered such critical national assets to orbit,” said Bill Parsons, president of RD AMROSS. “To date the NPO-Energomash designed and manufactured RD-180 has powered the launch of 46 Atlas vehicles (6 Atlas III, 40 Atlas V) with 100 percent mission success.”

ULA currently has greater than a two-year inventory of engines at the factory in Decatur, Ala. Through the ULA-sponsored U.S. RD-180 co-production program, Pratt & Whitney developed significant engineering and manufacturing capability and ultimately demonstrated the capability to co-produce the RD-180 in the U.S.

RD AMROSS, a limited liability company, is a U.S. joint venture between Pratt & Whitney of West Palm Beach, Fla., and NPO Energomash of KhimkiRussia.

ULA program management, engineering, test, and mission support functions are headquartered in Denver, Colo.  Manufacturing, assembly and integration operations are located at Decatur, Ala., and Harlingen, Texas. Launch operations are located at Cape Canaveral AFS, Fla., and Vandenberg AFB, Calif.
